Objective
Foot orthoses have been shown to be efficacious for the treatment of running-related musculoskeletal injuries. However, while the clinical efficacy of orthotic devices is widely documented, the mechanism behind that success is not well understood. Therefore, in partnership with SOLE Inc, we have designed several research studies to be conducted over a 5-year period of time. This group of studies will serve to understand and answer some fundamental questions related to the role of orthotics and moulded foot-bed sandals with respect to injury prevention, treatment, and foot mechanics and pressure distribution. Each study is linked in specific ways in an effort to optimize our efforts and these investigations build upon our current posterior tibialis fatigue studies.
