Clinic Personnel

Dr. Reed Ferber Ph.D., CAT(C), ATC
Director

Dr. Ferber is a board certified athletic therapist and holds a Ph.D. in sports medicine and gait biomechanics from the University of Oregon. He has completed post-doctoral research fellowships at the University of Delaware and the University of Calgary and specializes in the research and clinical treatment of lower extremity injuries. He is the Director of the Running Injury Clinic and an Assistant Professor in the Faculties of Kinesiology and Nursing at the University of Calgary. Dr. Ferber is also a Population Health Investigator through the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research.

Shari MacDonald
Clinic Director

Shari is our Clinic Director. She is a Registered Physical Therapist with over 13 years clinical experience. She has completed post graduate certifications in sport physiotherapy, acupuncture and manual therapy. Shari is involved with our clients who undergo full gait analysis and running injury evaluations.


Kimber Thornton
Research Coordinator

Kimber is our Research Coordinator and is responsible for organizing our clinical and research programs. She is a certified athletic therapist and has a Bachelor of Kinesiology from the University of Calgary.


Blayne Hettinga
Head of Research and Development

Dr. Hettinga completed his PhD in biomechanics focusing on optimizing performance through changes in equipment and technique at the University of Calgary. In the fall of 2009, Blayne joined the Running Injury Clinic to lead our team in the development of new products and innovative ideas.


Dr. Mike Pohl
Research Fellow

Dr. Pohl has finished his first post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Delaware and joined us to head up our clinical research projects.

He is a skilled biomechanist and his research into the atypical mechanics and treatment of common running injuries and knee osteoarthritis will continue to improve our clinical practice and dramatically add to our research portfolio.

Reginaldo Fukuchi
PhD Student

Reginaldo is a PhD student in the Faculty of Kinesiology and he is funded through the Brazilian Ministry of Education (CAPES Foundation). He completed his MSc in Biomechanics at the University of Sao Paulo in 2007. He then worked as an Assistant Professor and Researcher at the School of Physiotherapy of Universidade Nove de Julho before joining the Clinic in the Fall 2009. His research interests focus in understanding the effects of ageing on the running gait patterns.


Ryan Leigh
PhD Student

Ryan is a licensed physical therapist with the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. He completed his MSc in exercise physiology before completing his physiotherapy MPT degree, both at The University of Western Ontario. He is presently pursuing a PhD in biomechanics at The Running Injury Clinic at The University of Calgary. His research interests include understanding the biomechanics that underlie lower extremity injuries, particularly as it relates to improving clinical practice.


Karen Kendall
PhD Candidate

Karen is a certified athletic therapist CAT(C), a certified exercise physiologist CSEP-CEP, and certified strength and conditioning coach CSCS.

Karen has received a two-year Research Grant and the Meredith Scholarship from the Workers Compensation Board of Alberta to study low back pain. Her research will dramatically improve our ability to understand and rehabilitate this complex but very common injury.


Whitney Killback
MSc Student

Whitney is a Masters student in the new Integrated Bachelors-Masters Program in the Faculty of Kinesiology. She is a Dean’s List student for the past 2 years and is studying knee osteoarthritis (KNOA), one of the most common lower-extremity joint diseases.


Wendy Kimmel
Research Technician

Wendy has a MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Davis. She further explored sports biomechanics while working with elite athletes at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. She then moved to Calgary in 2010 to take on the task of designing and implementing our biomechanical analysis softwares.


Sean Osis
Research Technician and Developer

Sean Osis has both a Bachelor of Kinesiology and a Master of Science in Biomechanics from the University of Calgary. His skills in biomechanical research and design come from five years of experience in the Human Performance Laboratory. He has many responsibilities spanning several aspects of the clinic, including the development of our research database.


Sheila Magill
Administrative Assistant

Sheila is our Administrative Assistant and assists clients with booking appointments and answering any questions they may have. She is a certified personal trainer and has a Bachelor of Kinesiology from the University of Saskatchewan.


Talia Webber
Work Term Student

Talia is a 3rd year Kinesiology student at the University of Calgary. She is currently a work term experience student at the clinic and will be completing the 4 + 1 Integrated MSc program in clinical biomechanics.
